Stanford University, established 1891 by railway magnate Leland Stanford, is noted for its main quadrangle conceived by Frederick Law Olmsted with its 1903 Memorial Chapel plus the 1941 Hoover Tower.

The Burghers of Calais (1884) by August Rodin in Memorial Court at Stanford. The sculpture group commemorates the six civic leaders who volunteered to serve as a sacrifice to save the city during the 1347 surrender to King Edward III of England.
