Lower East Side Tenement Museum & Orchard Street, New York Photos

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum (97 Orchard St.) is an accidental time capsule in that one landlord simply locked up his tenement building early in the 20th Century rather than comply with city regulations. Today, the apartments are being restored to reflect various decades and the ethnic immigrants who actually lived there in those periods. With its heritage buildings with their fire escapes, Orchard Street itself is a fairly well preserved context for the museum & should be toured as part of the experience.
