General Robert E. Lee's "Army of Northern Virginia" attempted to take the Civil War into the North to discourage the Union into negotiating peace. On July 1, 1863, the Rebel forces encountered Union cavalry at the village of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. General Meade of the Union "Army of the Potomac" rushed up troops and held the high ground. Rather than retreat, Lee sent his troops uphill against the Union line in the fiercest battle of the War, resulting in over 51,000 soldiers killed, wounded, missing or captured over three days. Gettysburg became the turning point of the Civil War. On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of The Soldiers' National Cemetery. Gettysburg National Military Park became one of the best documented battlefields with over 1,400 monuments marking the position held by each military unit, both Northern & Southern.
