Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) is significant for his glass, steel & concrete structures & the influence they have on modern architecture. Born in Aachen, Germany, he worked with Peter Behrens. In 1928-30, he made his international reputation with the design for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exhibition & in 1930 became director of Bauhaus. Leaving Germany in 1937 because of Hitler, Mies became director of architecture at Armour (later Illinois) Institute of Technology in Chicago where he designed much of the campus. He gained further fame for buildings such as some on Chicago's Lakeshore & the Seagram Building in New York. |
