Marburg, Hesse Photos

Marburg, a University town in Hesse, is strongly associated with St. Elizabeth of Hungary who retired there, as a very young woman, after her husband's death. St. Elizabeth was venerated for her many charitable works, and St. Elizabeth's Church (13thC), the first truly Gothic church in Germany, was built in her memory not long after her death. The church is known for its exceptional works of art, and is an important visitor destination. Also of note is Marburg Castle on a hill overlooking the town, and the marketplace lined with historic buildings that escaped WWII bombing.
