Verdun, in eastern France, was the site of major WWI battles (1916), costing the lives of hundreds of thousands French & German soldiers. Memorials include the vast military cemetery, the artillery-shell shaped Memorial Tower & Douaumont Ossuary holding remains of more than 130,00 unknown soldiers.
