German Imperial Eagle Glass Humpen Photos

Humpen are large glass drinking or commemorative beakers skillfully decorated with many-colored scenes. One popular 16thC to 18thC theme was a double headed crowned eagle bearing shields of Germanic states on its wings (Reichsadler humpen). This design started as a demonstration of support for the Holy Roman Empire & evolved into a statement of unification of German states. A few examples of imperial eagles on other shapes of vessel are included for comparison.
