Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) was a French military officer who served under George Washington as a major-general in the American Revolutionary War. He was instrumental in involving France in its support of the United States. In 1824, at the invitation of President James Monroe, Lafayette visited all 24 U.S. states as a hero. Many portraits, statues and souvenirs were produced to mark the visit.
