Square 4-leg Grand Pianos Photos

Square Grands known by names like Box Pianos, are rectangular pianos which stand on four hefty legs. It was an early popular design in the USA because crated with legs & pedals removed for shipment they were easy to handle in railway baggage cars & then fit a horse-drawn wagon for delivery, even to isolated houses. Because the strings were laid parallel to the keyboard, the hammer mechanisms were more complex than upright pianos. As piano transport became less of an issue, the Square Grand design faded in popularity.
