St Francis of Assisi Art Photos

St Francis of Assisi (c1181-1226) was born into wealth and spent his young manhood in pleasure seeking. A vision of Christ completely changed his way of life; from then on, he devoted himself to a life of poverty and caring for the sick and poor. He founded the Franciscan Order, dedicated to absolute poverty and sent many friars to North Africa as missionaries. He was the first to build a crèche to mark Christ's birthday. He is known for receiving the stigmata (body marks corresponding to those left on Christ's body by the crucifixion). Francis saw God reflected in nature, and he is reputed to have had a great love of animals. He is the patron saint of ecology. It is a popular practice for people to bring their animals to church for a blessing on his feast day.
