St James Greater, Apostle Photos

St James the Greater Apostle (fisherman of Galilee) and older brother of St John Apostle, was beheaded in 42 CE after being tried by Herod. However, Middle Ages' Christian tradition tells the tale that he later preached in Spain and was buried in Compostella. Thus, he became the patron saint of Spain. During Medieval times millions of European pilgrims made a trek to venerate him at Santiago de Compostella, a tradition which continues until this day.
