St Lawrence Art Photos

St Lawrence (martyred 258) (aka Laurence) was deacon of Pope Sixtus II, to whom he was devoted. After Sixtus' execution during Emperor Valerian's persecution of Christians, the grief-stricken Lawrence sold the churches' possessions and gave the money to the poor, rather then turning over the treasures to Valerian. In retaliation, Lawrence was martyred by being burned on a red-hot grill. Symbol: grid-iron.
