George Washington Carver National Monument, Diamond, MO Photos

George Washington Carver (1864-1943) was the first African-American to become an eminent scientist, overcoming his birth into slavery. His work in agriculture mostly out of Tuskegee Institute was aimed at helping poor farmers gain a living from their land. To convince farmers to plant peanuts & soy beans which returned Nitrogen to the soil, he developed over 300 uses for peanuts to make crop rotation farming economically viable. Carver's birthplace site and the Moses Carver House of 1881 are now run as a National Monument by the National Park Service between Diamond and Joplin, MO.
