Johnston Farm and Indian Agency, Piqua, OH Photos

The Johnston Farm & Indian Agency outside of Piqua, OH is now an open air museum run by the Ohio Historical Society. John Johnston was appointed Indian Agent for western Ohio (1812-29) by the U.S. government. He succeeded on keeping Ohio Indians neutral during War of 1812, so they did not fight for the British. Ohio is divided by a ridge across the state from which rivers run north to Lake Erie or south to the Ohio River. The Indians had long created a trail to portage two important rivers and John Johnston established his farm on that trail and promoted what was to become the Miami & Erie Canal (built 1825-45) from Toledo to Cincinnati. Johnston built his house in about 1829. Today Johnston's museum house furnished to the period, a restored mile of the canal with a mule-pulled canal boat giving tourist rides and a museum covering Indian and local history make up the attraction.
