  • 1548: Mary sent to France while regents rule Scotland.
  • 1558: Mary marries Francis II, dauphin of France, who becomes king in 1559 then dies in 1560.
  • 1561: Mary, widowed queen of France, returns to Scotland.
  • 1565: Mary marries Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, her 19-year-old cousin.
  • 1566: Mary's Italian secretary, David Riccio/Rizzio, is murdered by Darnley & his friends.
  • 1566: Mary gives birth to James, later king of Scotland & England.
  • 1567: Mary's husband, Lord Darnley, is murdered
  • 1567: Mary weds James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell.
  • 1567: Mary is imprisoned at Lochleven Castle & is forced to abdicate.
  • 1567: Mary's one-year-old son James is crowned as James VI of Scotland.
  • 1568: Mary escapes from Lochleven Castle & flees to England.
  • 1568-87: Mary is held in various English prisons as she was considered sovereign of England by English Catholics & thereby a threat to Queen Elizabeth.
  • 1586: Mary is tried for conspiring to kill Queen Elizabeth.
  • 1587, Feb, 8: Mary is executed in Fotheringhay Castle, Northamptonshire.
  • 1603: Queen Elizabeth I dies & Mary's child, James VI of Scotland, becomes James I of England.
  • 1603: King James moves Mary's body to Westminster Abbey.
  • To present: Mary, Queen of Scots, became an important symbol for Scotland.
