Cass Gilbert (1859-1934) studied architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1878 when MIT was the prime US architectural school. In 1880 Gilbert toured England, France & Italy to study styles & then joined McKim, Mead and White in New York. In 1882, Gilbert set up his own practice in St. Paul, Minnesota briefly partnering (1884 1892) with James Knox Taylor to build the Minnesota State Capitol.
He designed the Capitols in Arkansas & West Virginia, did a number of public buildings & ended his career with the U.S. Supreme Court. Gilbert is considered one of the most important American architects.
